Riff, please don't kill me...

Look, I know it's a metal site, but goddammit, this song is just so bad ass. Plus it's on the soundtrack of Wet for PS3 and Xbox 360.

Maiden kick

Seems like lately all I am listening to is Iron Maiden these days. And I don't care what people say, Brave New World (despite its terrible cover art) is brilliant! Here's Dream of Mirrors from the Rock in Rio DVD.

And Speaking of Metal Festivals....

I present to you, the Scion Rock Fest, happening in the boonies of Columbus, Ohio on March 13. And oh baby, is it loaded! Cannibal Corpse, Voivod, Brutal Truth, and even Acrassaicauda are making an appearance! The best bit? It's for free! Of course, getting to Ohio is on your tab, but if you're there already, then you have no reason to miss this show. You can grab some free tix at the fest's web site, but only until this Friday.

In other good news, Ozzy himself has confirmed that Ozzfest will happen this year. It does make you wonder who they could get. Mayhem Fest has a good amount of the Ozzfest Alum, and the possible Big 4 tour will eat up more potential touring mates. About the only band I can think of that could pop in under Ozzy and doesn't have any in-stone touring plans is Alice In Chains. Anyone out there have any good Ozzfest possibilities?

Okay, who didn't pay the heating bill? Silent Hill Shattered Memories: The Riff Review

I'm a very admitted fanboy of the first three Silent Hill games. The represent to me what "terror" can be in a digital context. Silent Hill 2 is the best in the series, but part 3 had the best "WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK?!?!" scene out of the entire series.

Mayhemfest Bands Announced! Bathroom Breaks Officially Planned!

Mayhem Festival

Oh boy oh boy, 2010 looks to be a big metal festival year! The Big Four may tour together, Ozzfest is supposed to return, and Warped Tour is more metal than usual. Now the Mayhemfest people have drawn their swords and are offering their lineup for digest. Now, as any good festival planner will tell ya, you gotta throw in a few clunkers to the mix so everyone can go get nachos or pinch a loaf off. This year is definitely no different. My opinions and all dates after the jump.

8-bit Metal Mondays on Tuesday: Yep, Took The Holiday Off

Hey, needed a day to file my tax returns and fiddle around with my new Ipod Touch, okay?

Now, with that out of the way, All Shall Perish. I'm always late to what all the kiddies have been bragging about for years, and ASP fell right into that category. I've been listening to their latest, Awaken The Dreamers, the past few days, and it is slammer-rific. It was also one of the first cd's I transferred to my new Ipod, so I can listen to the opening track "When Life Meant More" over and over again.

You should get the same feeling too. So here's the 8-bit version.

New SMB Wii: Single Player review

It had been almost two entire decades since we had seen the sanguine Italian plumber star in an original 2d console outing, not counting handhelds. Until NSMB Wii hit shelves in late 2009, the most recent 2d Mario on a home system had been Super Mario World; in 1991 for cryin' out loud. But now, 2d Mario goodness is back, and he's brought a few new (and some old) surprises as well.

The first thing one might notice is that the graphics aren't always up to snuff with todays finest digital eye-candy showpieces. This is true even if you're a Wii only gamer, like I was until February of last year. Even though it's still quite a stretch away from what I'd typically call an "ugly" game, it has more than enough brilliantly designed platforming levels that more than make up for any visual shortcomings. At least in my opinion. Others might dismiss it for being thematically the same as every other Mario game to come out. But like Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts to a lesser extent, Mario is a series that absolutely thrives on its nostalgic value. It's hard for me to hate a game for staying true to its roots (ex: Sonic and the CDi Zelda games *shudder*).

Yes! New Kingdom Of Sorrow Coming!

What? Never heard of Kingdom Of Sorrow or listened to their self titled release? Been doing to much heroin or something, you shmuck? The Jamey Jasta/Kirk Windstein superband was a sweet  slice of sludgy metal that bent your mom over backwards and gave her sweet dreams for months. Now she'll be asking for seconds, as a just-received press release has announced that the twosome have finished recording their second record, are about to start mixing, and have resigned to Relapse. A direct quote from the press realase:

8-bit Metal Mondays: Black Metal Beats

just to prove that kids in the darkened  heart of Norway really don't have nothung else to do except worship their leather-and-spiked Gods, there are now 8-bit black metal parodies. Actually, whoever did this could be living in Wisconsin for all I know, but still. Anyways, judge for yourself. Here's a bleepy version of Dimmu Borgir's The Serpentine Offering.

Dan Brown sure would be proud. A review by Amebix720

Hello loyal readers! It's been a while but I'm back with another review. This time I will be taking a look at Assassin's Creed II from Ubisoft. Now, I'll be the first to admit that the first Assassin's creed was most certainly not my favorite game. The repetition of the missions really grated on me. So much so, I never really got around to finishing it. So after reading the previews and some of the reviews on AC II, I thought I would give it a shot. Plus, I just took a class on the Italian Renaissance and was really interested to see how well they pulled that part of history into the game.

Suicidal Tendencies first DVD being released this month!

Finally the Cycos will be able to enjoy the intensity of a Suicidal Tendencies concert int he comfort of their own living room! It's hard to believe that it's taken this long for ST to jump on the DVD bandwagon, but I won't knock them for it. Look for this DVD in your favourite music stores starting January 26th. I've got the impressive track listing after the jump!

How To Quit Your Job: Video Game Style

So, today I did my daily routine of checking Cracked.com for my daily dose of wit/sarcasm/well-placed cleavage, when a bit of awesomeness slapped in the face harder than a pimp's hand. Cracked did  a top 7 list of "Ballsiest Ways To Quit Your Job", and the first one off the list is absolutely geek-tastic. Looks like some schmuck at 2K Australia (they were half way responsible for Bioshock being in existence, so good on them) decided to seek greener pastures, and have his goodbyes in video game form.

The game itself is just a Mario parody, but the sheer slickness of it should be respected and periodically bowed to, over and over again. Do yourself a favor and check it out here. Remember, space bar to jump, kiddies.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii: Another Disturbying Review

Background: Do I really need to go into this? It's Mario, so what can you expect? Mushrooms, Pipes, Goombas, Koopas, Stars, Penguin Suits, Co-Operative Gameplay, Stars, Bows- wait. Penguin Suits!?! Co-Operative Gameplay!?! That's right folks, the classic 2D Mario game is back only this time you get to play it with 3 of your friends..... at the same time! With new levels to explore and new powerups to obtain, Nintendo puts a fresh spin on the game that made them a household name.

8-bit Metal Mondays: Saying Goodbye To The Rev

Avenged Sevenfold is one of the few bands that I got to see befoe they blew up into arena acts. Lamb of God, Godsmack, and System of a Down also fit into the niche (admittedly, I try not to reference that Godsmack one too much). To show you how far down A7X was on the bill, they were third fiddle to headliners Mushroomhead. Yeah, the Slipknot ripoffs. For even greater reference, All That Remains played under them, and Shadows Fall played after. Nowadays, Mushroomhead probably wouldn't even be able to say hi to any of these guys without getting puzzled stares from everyone else as they think,"Who the fuck are these guys?"

The Black Dahlia Murder must know when my birthday is.... kinda

First off, I hope everyone had a great couple weeks for the holidays. With luck you got everything you wanted and were able to tolerate all the in-laws without busting out the Shotgun of Damnation during Christmas. Also, if your luck kept up, you didn't crash into anything or are soon to be the parent to a bouncy baby with a woman you don't know after as night of binge drinking on New Years. Now that we have the well wishes out of the way, onto those fine lads up there in the snazzy bowling shirts.
