Last Week in Video Games

Man oh man, what a week! There's some flooding going on in Louisiana and Manitoba. Round two of the playoffs finished with Vancouver and San Jose advancing to the Western Conference final. Gas prices are going up. Arnold Schwarzenegger's marriage was Running Man'd (I think that's the correct reference). And a certain company's network has finally been reactivated.

Yup, after three weeks of downtime the Playstation Network is back up and running. Well, almost. Looks like the store is still down and we still haven't been given details on the "Welcome Back" package that people will get because of the downtime. But, a new patch has been released forcing members to change their password in order to access their account again. You'll be able to watch Netflix/Hulu, chat with your friends, compare trophies and play games online again. HOORAY! With all this exciting PSN news, surely there can't be anything else to talk about...

Sony wasn't the only network to be hacked. Looks like Square Enix's websites for Eidos and Dues Ex were both hacked resulting in having up to 25,000 email addresses and 350 resumes in the hands of the hackers. I guess these guys didn't learn that if it could happen to Sony, it could damn well happen to anyone.

Soul Calibur V was announced earlier this week (you know, when that countdown ended). Namco is keeping a lot of details close to the chest but here's what we've got so far. The game takes place 17 years after the events of Soul Calibur IV so we'll probably see a lot of new characters and we'll have to say goodbye to some favourites. From the teaser video, it looks like Siegfried is back (so probably Nightmare as well?) and there is a new character named Patroklos who is Sophitia's son. The trailer had symbols for the PS3 and Xbox 360 so at least we know what system(s) it is coming out for (not like that was a huge surprise).

Tidbits:
  • Chrono Trigger will also be released for the Virtual Console. JRPG fans can be heard screaming "WIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!"
  • Mortal Kombat was the best selling game last month. That's right, even over Portal 2!
  • Ubisoft plans to release more games for their "big" franchises more often. No names were given but this could include more stuff from Prince of Persia, Far Cry and Splinter Cell
  • Microsoft bought Skype (and probably not in the Simpsons manner "Buy him out boys.") Look for Skype on XBox Live in the future.
  • Blizzard says they're going to have a Beta of Diablo III close to the end of the year. Yeah.... sure they are.
