Last Week in Video Games

I hope you guys appreciate that I am taking time away from watching NHL Playoff hockey to write this. I can still hear the game and it sounds like Phoenix is taking it to Nashville right now so I really want to get back to watching it! So I am going to fire through this week's post cause I'm cool like that!

Last Week In Video Games

Another week has come and gone and with it a bunch of news has surfaced. Riff couldn't contain himself and stole my thunder a bit by posting a story on God of War Ascension the day it was revealed. I don't blame him though, cause that's a pretty awesome reveal this week. There have been hints that a new game would be announced leading up to Thursday, but at first we weren't sure what it was going to be. Wednesday it sounded like it would be a GoW game and sure enough on Thursday our questions were all answered. I still have only played the original GoW from start to finish. I have yet to playthrough 2 or even try 3. Even though GoWA is a prequel, I should probably play the older titles first before this new one comes out. But enough talk of Kratos, let us see what else happened.

PAX East 2012 Photo Dump!

I'm currently in the process of writing up my final columns for PAX, but I figured that to bridge the gap, a quickie pictorial would help. So enjoy some of the sights of PAX East 2012!

Official: God of War gets another prequel!

Yep, we're going back into Kratos's past with God of War: Ascension! Not too much is really known so far, other than the teaser trailer puts this game well before the events of the first prequel, PSP's Chains of Olympus. That's gonna mean a few things. First, Kratos isn't always gonna have the Blades of Chaos on him, since he didn't get them until he became best buds with Hades. Plus, the big white guy's probably not gonna be too white for a lot of the game. That's right, I predict flesh tones! Since Kratos didn't get his ashy skin until he killed his family, it would make sense to show the guy au natural for a change.

Okay, enough predictions for me. Here's the teaser trailer. Draw your own conclusions.

Best of PAX East 2012: Sega

Poor old Sega's been having a rough time as of late. A recent cutback in expenses has given a lot of would-be titles the shitcan. One of them was a HD re-release of Shenmue, and many a fanboy's heart was broken. Still, Sega kept a lot of good around and they put a real god showing into their PAX exhibit. Now, I didn't get to try every one of their games. One that I missed was called Hell Yeah, a puzzle/platformer that's been getting tons of praise. As a one-man team, I had to go with brand recognition. Still, I got the chance to play some real strong demos and I had a good feeling that Sega's gonna bounce back with this slate of releases.

Last Week In Video Games

The NHL Playoffs started on Wednesday and since then I've spent most of my evenings in front of the TV. Okay, so it's not that different from how I was spending my time before the playoffs other than I'm not playing games any more. I tell ya, the games so far have been a ton of fun. Even a series that didn't look that exciting on paper has proven to be great to watch anyway. And because I am good at multi-tasking, I have been able to keep up to date on all things video game related during all of this hockey madness.

PAX East 2012: The Best of Show!

Okay kiddies, it's time to dissect PAX East, right straight to the gibblets! As the title suggests, this will be a sort-of awards deal, with the winners getting nothing. Sorry, we're poor. In the next few days, I'll go in depth with several of the companies that really impressed me, as well as show off a few pics as well.

Best Booth: 2K Games    Runner-up: Ubisoft

2K really wanted to show that they were more than the company publishing Bioshock: Infinite, and all their titles were given grand treatments. Borderlands 2 got the most build-up thanks to one hella layout and a photo-frenzy statue depicting the new main characters. Spec Ops: The Line got similar treatment, even if the game wasn't that spectacular. X-Com: Enemy Unknown and the new Civ V expansion each had their own little theaters to show off demo reels. Runner-up Ubisoft earns special points for their monolith-like Assassin's Creed III area and jungle-esque Farcry 3 booth.

Best Single Player Demo: Max Payne 3   Runner-up: Dragon's Dogma

Max Payne 3 may have been the only game Rockstar was showing off, but it was the right choice by far. All that gritty drama of Max blasting away baddies in bullet time came rushing back to me. Now I'm also gonna have the jingling of pain killers stuck in my head for weeks. Capcom did a good job of pimping out Dragon's Dogma by showcasing a level with a huge Chimaira boss.

Best Demo Video Tie: Assassin's Creed III and Aliens: Colonial Marines
Runner-up: X-Com Enemy Unknown

Demo videos may not be as exciting as playing the actual game, but they can give a player insight to a game's new mechanics. Assassin's Creed III did that remarkably with it's tree climbing, hookshot hanging, and avoiding being killed while hiding in the middle of a warfield. Aliens did the opposite and just let the demo play with all the insane blood and action tell the story itself. X-Com's vid gave a newbie to the series, like myself, a quick tutorial on how the game was originally played and how the new title will tighten things up.

Best Multiplayer: Aliens: Colonial Marines    Runner-up: Borderlands 2

Be either a Marine or an Alien. It's been done before, but never with this much polish and fun attached to it. It's almost like an apology letter for letting Alien Vs. Predator to exist. Borderlands 2 made me wish I had bought the original all that time ago. Of course I still can.......

Best Handheld Game: Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir

Handheld games were very few this year, with most space given to iOS and Android apps. However,  Nintendo did show off augmented reality heavy hitter Spirit Camera. Think early Silent Hill with AR added on. Turn and aim your camera by moving the 3DS around you. Oh, and watch creepy shit come put of an enclosed diary.

Best Downloadable Game: Sonic 4 Episode 2   Runner-up: Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown

Sega rules the roost this time. The next Sonic episode is looking damn good. Tails is back, and now you can do special co-op moves with the little tyke. Either plow through snow or do Tail's trademark dive to catch you from falling. Virtua Fighter 5 is making a comeback itself with a beefed up edition, and I'm so glad to see it.

The Comeback Kids: Square Enix and Sega

For being down on their luck, both of these companies really pulled out all the strings to try to get back into the good graces of gamers. Both will get individual write-ups, but what a showing from both. Square themselves really came lout swinging, but there's a\reason why they didn't take any awards which I'll get into later.Sega as well.

Game of Show: Aliens: Colonial Marines   Runner-up: Assassin's Creed III

Some booths had multiplayer, while others had the demo reels. However, only one game had both, and both were equally awesome. The demo reel was full of action and suspense. The multiplayer was intense, and to sweeten the deal, we were put up against the original dev team! Fuck, they were good! The ACIII vid was chockfull of new stuff do in an AC game, and it just makes you wanna anticipate the bear future of the game.
Hey, there's always E3!

Last Week In Video Games

Happy Easter! Hope everyone had a good one. I was able to spend some time with friends and family as well as enjoy more than my fair share of delicious food. Plus, this is one of the first Easters I can remember where there was green grass in almost everyone's lawn. Usually around this time of year there is still a foot of snow outside with no sign of it going away. It's been a weird couple months for weather, but I don't think there are too many people complaining about it. But, with good weather on the doorstep it means that I will be spending most of my time outside instead of in doors playing games. Doesn't mean I can't keep up to date with my video game news though!

Thursday, April 5, 2012

Good evening, people.

Yes, it's Riff, conjuring himself back with an unfortunate update. My estranged absence was due to a very sudden and shocking death in the family. My uncle was diagnosed with leukemia a short while back, but the cancer suddenly spread all over and he was gone too quick. There was a bunch of turmoil and unnecessary drama from all sides. I really don't want to go into too much detail, but things were not pretty and they probably  won't be fixed for some time. So, instead of trying to deal with everything all at once, I decided to step away until after the funeral, hoping that things would calm down, and they have for the moment.

Also, as I type this, I'm in Boston prepping for PAX East which is tomorrow morning. Things were getting so bad at home that I was considering ditching the trip at the last moment to play family referee, but thankfully that didn't happen. Plus, now I get to have a mental rest from the folks and return to my gaming ways.

Since this is PAX, I'm gonna do my dambdest (is that a word?) to play every single new demo that I can. I've got media access again, so I'll be able to hop some neat shit before anyone else. I brought my camera, so there'll be plenty of pics, and some video if I can squeeze it in.

So, tune back in next week, for PAX mania 2012!

Last Week In Video Games

The thought of doing something for April Fool's Day had crossed my mind, but I've decided not to do anything different this week. No, seriously. It's just a regular old recap of what happened last week in video games. Of course, sifting through the news today proved a lot more fun than it usually is. Gotta say that there were a few stories that had a lot of effort put into them to make them look legit. Between the faux game news and the fake items added to thinkgeek.com, April Fool's Day is slowly becoming this metal head's favourite time of year. I threw a few links in the tidbits this week so you guys don't miss out on the good ones. But first, there's real news to report!
